I used to think closed captions were just a checkbox thing. Something you slap on at the end for accessibility compliance and forget about. Then I started paying attention to how I actually consume video content, and it clicked: captions are everywhere, and they matter way more than most editors realize.

Think about it. You’re scrolling Instagram on the bus with no headphones. You’re watching a tutorial in a noisy café. You’re an English learner trying to catch every word in a podcast clip. Captions make all of that work. There’s actually solid research showing that even advanced language learners benefit from on-screen text.

And here’s something I didn’t expect: social media platforms now prioritize captioned content. If your videos don’t have them, you’re already behind. As of late 2026, it’s pretty much the standard.

Adding Captions in Final Cut Pro

The good news is FCP makes this dead simple now. Here’s how I do it:

1. Import your video and get it on the timeline
2. Right click the clip you want captioned and hit Transcribe to Captions
3. FCP will auto-generate them. You can tweak font, size, color, whatever fits your style
4. Export with captions embedded, choosing the right format for wherever it’s going

The whole thing takes maybe two minutes once you’ve done it a couple of times.

Why the Option to Toggle Matters

One thing I really appreciate about proper caption systems is that viewers can turn them on or off. It’s not about forcing text on everyone. It’s about giving people the choice to watch the way that works best for them. Some folks want them, some don’t, and both are valid.
